Edgar George Clarke was born at Lucknow in 1895; he was the son of Robert and Margaret Clarke (nee Dunn). At the time of enlistment on 15 February 1916 he gave his occupation as a motor driver and his address as Coffs Harbour. He had had three years’ experience in the Senior Cadets.
On 23 June 1916 he embarked at Sydney HMAT A37 Barambah, arriving in England in November. From England, he embarked at Folkestone for service in France where he joined the 55th Battalion. Private Clarke was killed in action on 2 April 1917 and was buried in the Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Edgar George Clarke is remembered on panel number 160 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Edgar’s brother Lance Corporal William Robert Clarke 2587, a mining engineer, also served in the 1st Pioneer Battalion. He returned to Australia in 1919.
