The name suggests this street was developed soon after World War I and named after Sir Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby, a Field Marshall during World War I. According to John McKenzie quoted by Ros Maroney "Allenby Rd. was originally supposed to be an all-brick area, but some weatherboard houses were later erected there in the 1950s".

Field Marshall, Viscount Allenby and Lady Allenby visited Orange in January 1926 and were given a most enthusiastic welcome. A civic reception was held in their honour and after a memorial service at Holy Trinity Church they were shown the sights of the district. The Sydney Morning Herald of 21 January 1926 described how the 'town hall and main buildings in the town were profusely decorated with flags and bunting in honour of the visit and hundreds of people from outlying districts came into the town and joined in the enthusiastic welcome afforded the distinguished visitors'.
