Named after Admiral Byng who, like his father before him carried out many successful exploits and attained this high dignity. By being later sent on an expedition to Minorca to attack the French, but failing to obey the instructions given he was tried by court marshal and shot on his ship at Spithead.

The Surveyor-General named the parish of Byng after this famous naval man.

The name "Cornish Settlement" was changed to "Byng" in 1852.
