Fate: Embarked HMAT A68 Anchises, Melbourne, 14 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 June 1916. Disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Taken on strength, 5th Pioneer Battalion, in the field, and allotted Regimental No 2867A, 25 August 1916. Admitted to 1st Anzac Corps Rest Station with abrasions to his feet 15 January 1917. Discharged to duty, 31 January 1917. Rejoined unit 5 February 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 1 March 1917. Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance with scabies, 6 July 1917. Transferred to 9th Casualty Clearing Station 24 July 1917 Discharged to duty, 21 June 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 24 August 1917. Wounded in action, Ypres, Belgium, 13 October 1917. Died of wounds, 13 October 1917.

James Charles Edmond was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, to James and Agnes Edmond. He was educated at George Street School in Dunedin, then the Dunedin High School. James also served for three years in the 1st Company, 4th Regiment, Infantry in New Zealand.

James came to Australia in 1913 aged 23. He enlisted in Orange on 16 October 1915, but under the name “Charles Alexander”. He gave his occupation as tinsmith and motor driver and nominated his brother Lennox Fergus Edmond in Dunedin as his next of kin.

James embarked HMAT A68 Anchises in Melbourne on 14 March 1916. He served in Egypt and on the Western Front. James was wounded in action at Ypres in Belgium on 13 October 1917. He died later that day from his wounds.

James Charles Edmond, aka Charles Alexander, is commemorated on panel no 174 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
