On Wednesday 12 May 1937 the town celebrated the coronation of King George VI in what the local press described as a ‘tremendously impressive demonstration of loyalty to the new reign’. This featured a religious service in Robertson Park, a parade of military units and patriotic organisations and a monster gala and sporting carnival at Wade Park.
