Edward Alexander Dickson was one of the seven men from the Orange district to die during the Battle of Menin Road Ridge. He was killed in action on 20 September 1917, his burial place unknown.

Edward was one month shy of his 18th birthday when he enlisted at Dubbo on 18 February 1916. He was born at Bathurst in 1898, the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Dickson, a tailor at the Brown and Brown’s store in Orange.

Edward Alexander Dickson is remembered on the Orange Public School Honour Roll, Holy Trinity Church Orange Honour Roll, on the World War I Roll of Honour on the southern face of the Orange Cenotaph, on panel number 81 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and on panel 23 of the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium.

In 1923 the Anzac Memorial Avenue of trees was planted along Bathurst Road to commemorate fallen WWI soldiers. A tree was planted in honour of “Pte EA Dixon”, presumably Edward. It was donated by OC Gardiner. Very few of the trees are still standing today.
