Signaller Ernest Henry Richard Guest, 14th Reinforcements D Company 26th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 3 May 1917, aged 27 years. He was one of twelve men from the Orange district who was killed that day during the disastrous Second Battle of Bullecourt. The offensive lasted two weeks, with Australian casualties numbering almost 7,500, for no military advantage.

Ernest was the only son of Charles Henry Guest and Emma Guest and was born in Orange in 1890. The family later moved to Roma in Queensland.

Ernest enlisted in Brisbane on 1 January 1916. He embarked HMAT A50 ''Itonus'' at Brisbane on 8 August 1916 and proceeded to France on 13 December 1916. Red Cross Wounded and Missing Files report that he was killed instantly on the 3 May 1917.

Private Ernest Guest is believed to be buried at the Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France. His headstone reads ''“Nearer my God to Thee”''.

Ernest’s name appeared in the list of casualties in Brisbane’s ''Daily Standard'' on Saturday, 16 June 1917. He is remembered on the Roma War Memorial Cenotaph, the Roll of Honour in the Roma/Bungil Cultural Centre and on panel number 107 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.. An avenue of bottle trees was planted in Roma, Queensland, in memory of fallen soldiers from the area.
