Buried: Between Lone Pine and Brown’s Dip, Gallipoli, Turkey


Joseph George Thew was born in Burwood in 1890. He was the first child born to George J Thew and his wife, Jane Elizabeth Growder.

When he enlisted in Sydney in September 1914 Joseph was living in Manildra, where he worked as a packer.

Joseph embarked for Egypt in October 1914, a private in the 3rd Battalion. Private Thew was killed in action in the Battle of Lone Pine at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.
