Fate: Embarked HMAT A14 Euripides, Sydney, 9 September 1916. Proceeded to France 14 December 1916. Killed in action, France, 5 May 1917.

James Budge enlisted at Liverpool on 3 April 1916 and formed part of the 20th Reinforcement of the 3rd Battalion. He embarked HMAT A14 Euripides on 9 September for England, and proceeded to France on 14 December 1916.

James served on the Western Front for six months; he was killed in action on 5 May 1917 during the Battle of Bullecourt. He was one of 21 men from the Orange district who were killed in that conflict. A fellow soldier reported:

About noon witness was in the rear of a party of 7, who were taking up bombs by a sunken road at Bullecourt,

when they came under heavy machine gun fire. Witness was just behind Budge, who with 5 others was killed.

He passed him quite close and he never moved and reached the position about 15 yards ahead where he delivered the bombs.

Witness and the other survivor then returned under heavy fire, and on the way back saw Budge’s body,

but it was much too hot to attempt to get him in.

The enemy recovered the ground that night and it is unlikely any of the bodies could be brought in.

James’ medals and personal belongings were returned to his sister, Caroline, who had raised him from birth.

James Budge is remembered on panel number 35 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux in France.
