James Dalton was born at Duntryleague, County Limerick, Ireland c.1834. He immigrated to Australia in 1849 aged 15 and settled in the Orange district. He engaged in business with his father until 1853 when he set up business for himself as a storekeeper. James was Mayor of Orange in 1869 and built the mansion Duntryleague in 1876. He married Margaret Collins in 1858 and together they had 12 children. James died in Orange in 1919 and was buried in the Dalton Crypt at the Orange Cemetery.
