  Born in Orange in 1890, the son of William and Elizabeth Hamilton, James was the youngest of eleven children. He enlisted in Sydney on 29 August 1915 and embarked there on HMAT Warilda on 8 October 1915 as part of the 3rd Battalion AIF. He was wounded and hospitalised twice before being killed in action at Ypres on 29 October 1917.

James is buried in the Belgian Battery Corner Military Cemetery and is remembered on panel number 30 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

James Hamilton was the uncle of John Patrick Hamilton VC, whose statue stands at the corner of Byng and Anson Streets adjacent to the Soldier’s Memorial Hall, now the WE Agland Memorial Museum. John Patrick Hamilton was the son of James’ oldest brother William.
