Councillor Margaret Stevenson OAM was elected to Orange City Council on 18 September 18 1971. She and Leone Healy who was voted in at the same election were the first women elected to Council in Orange. Councillor Stevenson was on Council for eight terms serving for 35 years. She was Orange City Council’s longest serving councillor and was the longest serving female councillor in local government history in Australia. She held the position of Deputy Mayor from September 1984 to September 1985 and was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1991 for services to local government. Margaret Stevenson Park is named in her honour.

Cr Stevenson was a committed fundraiser for the Red Shield Appeal, Mid West Heart Fund and the Fairy Sparkle Garden.

Cr Stevenson died on Monday 11 December 2006. At the time of her death she was Chairperson of the Planning, Building and Health Policy Committee, the Planning Approvals Committee and the Orange Health Liaison Committee. She was also a Member of the Orange Access Advisory Committee, Sister Cities Advisory Committee, Radiotherapy Alliance and the Aboriginal Employment Strategy Working Party.
