Michael Casey Mayor of Orange 1875

Michael Casey was born in 1837 in County Limerick. At the age of 13 he immigrated to New Brunswick, America with his parents where he worked in sawmills. The Civil War broke out and in the conscription that followed Michael was drafted as a solider, but escaped actual warfare by providing a substitute, which was done by paying someone else to go to war in his place. He married Margaret Dalton in 1860 and in 1865 travelled to Orange to join his brother in-law James Dalton, where he had charge of the Dalton Flour mill for 12 years. He was an Alderman in 1872 Mayor of Orange in 1875. He died in Orange on 7 February 1895 aged 58 years.He is buried in the Orange Cemetery.
