Nurse Sarah Mabel Morgan (née Burke) was a popular Orange midwife, who for many years ran St Agnes Private Hospital on the southern side of Bathurst Road between Endsleigh Avenue and Edward Street. Nurse Morgan opened St Agnes in April 1927 and continued running it until her retirement in 1954. During that time it was estimated that she delivered about 2600 babies, including one weighing 19 pounds – a sensational 8.6 kilograms.

Nurse Morgan also went to people’s homes to deliver babies, often travelling by taxi. She was a strong supporter of Orange Ambulance Service and raised a significant amount of money to furnish the new ambulance station when it opened in 1932. Her services were recognised in 1938 when she was awarded life membership of the NSW Ambulance Transport Service. In 1946 she helped organise a fundraiser to install a wireless receiver in one of the ambulances to enable the driver to be contacted quickly in an emergency.

Nurse Morgan died in November 1962 aged 72 years.
