William John Carroll was the only surviving son of Elizabeth and Michael Carroll, who established the Summer Hill estate near Lucknow in 1851.

Born close to the site of the future family property in 1837, William lived is whole life at Summer Hill. He was reportedly a naturally reserved man, though strong in his convictions and generous, without making an open show of charity.

In 1860 William married Charlotte McLean, a widow from Bathurst. Between 1862 and 1878 they had seven children, Michael, Charlotte, William, Bathurst, Jessie, Margaret and Elizabeth.
