William Robert Bulloch aged 18 years enlisted in the AIF at Lithgow on 30 July 1915. He was the eldest son of Duncan and Sarah (nee Hillier) Bulloch of Kendall Street, Bathurst, and the grandson son of James Hillier of the 17th Lancers who served with the British Army in the Crimean War.

William formed part of the 12th Reinforcements 2nd Battalion who embarked from Sydney on HMAT A7 Medic on 30 December 1915. He spent some time in Cairo before travelling to Marseilles and on to the Western Front. On 7 August 1915 he was appointed Lance Corporal. William was killed in action “in the field” at Belgium on 5 September 1916.

William was buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, Zillebeke, Belgium, Plot 6, Row M Grave 19 and is remembered on panel number 31 on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

William’s younger brother, Duncan Rae Bulloch, enlisted in the First World War on 4 November 1918, just one week before Armistice. He was discharged from the AIF on 31 December 1918.
